How to use the MCP config generator
- Choose the output: commands for your own Claude Code, a
.mcp.jsonfor your team, or the Claude Desktop config file. - Tick the servers you need. Fewer is better: each one is a connection, a credential and a trust decision.
- Copy or download the result. Set the listed environment variables, or replace the
YOUR_…placeholders on your own machine. - In Claude Code, run
/mcpto confirm each server connected and to sign in to OAuth servers. In Claude Desktop, fully quit and reopen the app.
Commands, .mcp.json or Desktop config?
Use commands when you are setting up your own machine. Use .mcp.json when the
whole team should get the same servers: Claude Code expands ${VAR} references from each
person's environment, so the file can be committed without secrets. Use the Claude Desktop file for
local servers in the desktop app; remote servers are added there as connectors instead. The
MCP servers guide explains scopes, OAuth and security in depth.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the three outputs?
claude mcp add commands register servers with Claude Code from your terminal (local scope by default). A .mcp.json file in the project root shares the same servers with everyone who clones the repo. claude_desktop_config.json is the file Claude Desktop reads for local servers.
How are API keys and tokens handled?
The generator never asks for or stores secrets. In .mcp.json it writes ${VAR} references that Claude Code expands from your environment, so the file is safe to commit. In commands and the Claude Desktop file it writes YOUR_VAR placeholders that you replace locally.
Why are some servers missing from the Claude Desktop config?
Remote (HTTP) servers are not added through claude_desktop_config.json. In Claude Desktop and claude.ai you add them as connectors under Customize, Connectors, Add custom connector. The generator lists their URLs under the output.
How do I check that a server works?
In Claude Code, run /mcp: a checkmark means connected and servers that use OAuth offer an Authenticate option. In Claude Desktop, fully quit and reopen the app, then look for the server under the + menu in a new chat.
Are these MCP servers safe to install?
Every server in the list links to our review with its source. A server runs with the access you give it, so use least-privilege tokens and read-only database users, and be careful with servers that fetch untrusted web content.
