CLAUDE.md Generator

Describe your project once and get a clean CLAUDE.md that Claude Code reads at the start of every session. Start from a preset or a blank form, watch the preview update, then copy or download.

Private by design: nothing you type is uploaded or tracked. Your draft is saved only in this browser.

Choosing a preset replaces the fields below.

Commands

Leave blank to skip. These are the most useful lines in the file.

Format: path: purpose. Only list what isn't obvious from the code.

One item per line. Existing bullets are fine.

How to use the CLAUDE.md generator

  1. Pick a preset close to your stack, or start blank.
  2. Fill in the commands Claude should run to build, test and lint. Specific commands beat vague advice.
  3. Add only the conventions and rules Claude can't infer from the code: things a new teammate would need to be told.
  4. Copy or download the file and save it as CLAUDE.md in your repository root, then commit it.
  5. Start Claude Code and run /context: your file should appear under Memory files.

What makes a good CLAUDE.md

Claude treats CLAUDE.md as context, not enforced configuration, so write instructions it can verify ("Run pnpm test before committing", not "test your changes") and keep the file short. Move rules that only apply to some files into .claude/rules/ and multi-step procedures into skills. Anything that must happen every single time belongs in a hook. The CLAUDE.md guide covers load order, @imports and five full templates.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CLAUDE.md file?

CLAUDE.md is a Markdown file of project instructions that Claude Code reads at the start of every session: build and test commands, conventions, where things live and rules to follow. It saves you from re-explaining the project each time.

Where do I save the generated CLAUDE.md?

Save it as CLAUDE.md (or .claude/CLAUDE.md) in your repository root and commit it so your team shares it. Personal preferences for every project go in ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md, and private notes for one project go in CLAUDE.local.md, which you should add to .gitignore.

How long should CLAUDE.md be?

Anthropic recommends keeping each CLAUDE.md under 200 lines. Longer files use more context and are followed less reliably. The generator warns you when the file grows past that.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The generator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or logged. Your draft is saved only in this browser, and a share link carries the form in the part of the URL after #, which browsers never send to a server.

Should I use this or /init?

Both work well together. /init analyses your codebase and drafts a CLAUDE.md automatically; this generator is useful for writing the rules /init cannot infer, such as team conventions and things Claude must never do. Merge the two and trim anything Claude can work out from the code.
