The Atlassian MCP Server (also called Atlassian Rovo MCP Server) is Atlassian’s official, cloud-hosted Model Context Protocol bridge. It gives Claude secure, real-time access to Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Bitbucket, Compass and Loom, inheriting each user’s existing permissions. It is generally available and supports OAuth 2.1 or API tokens.
Who it is for
Teams on Atlassian Cloud who want Claude to read tickets and specs, create work items from notes, or keep Confluence pages in sync with code changes.
Install in Claude Code
From the README:
claude mcp add --transport http atlassian https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp
Then run /mcp in a session to authenticate. An Atlassian plugin with skills is also listed in Anthropic’s official marketplace as atlassian@claude-plugins-official.
Use cases
- “Find issues assigned to me in PROJ and summarize what’s blocked.”
- Generate Jira work items from meeting notes or a spec.
- Update a Confluence page after a deploy procedure changes.
- Review Loom recordings or Bitbucket context while debugging.
Pros
- Official, GA, and covers the whole Atlassian Cloud suite.
- Admins control access at the permission-group level; destructive tools are off by default.
- One URL works across Claude, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and more.
Cons and caveats
- Cloud only. Jira Service Management tools require API-token auth enabled by an admin.
- Write tools change shared team data; review before confirming.
- For Server/Data Center, use the community sooperset/mcp-atlassian (about 6k stars), which runs locally via
uvx mcp-atlassianwith your Jira and Confluence tokens.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work with Jira Server or Data Center?
No. The official server is a cloud bridge for Atlassian Cloud sites. For Server/Data Center, the community sooperset/mcp-atlassian project supports both.
Which endpoint should I use?
Atlassian recommends v2 at mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp for new setups. It exposes more tools and more products than v1.
Can Claude delete Jira issues?
The delete_jira and manage_jira tools are disabled by default and must be enabled by an organization admin.
