- Claude vs Gemini
Claude and Gemini are both excellent general assistants in 2026, and their entry prices are within a cent of each other. The real differences are elsewhere: what each plan bundles, how far the free tiers go, how the coding agents work, and which ecosystem you already live in. This comparison covers all of that fairly.
Prices and features were checked on October 24, 2026 on claude.com/pricing, Google’s Gemini subscriptions page and both API pricing pages. We don’t quote benchmark scores: they shift with every model release and rarely predict how a model handles your work. Claudekit.ai is independent and not affiliated with Anthropic or Google.
Quick verdict
- Pick Claude if you write, analyse or code for a living and want an assistant you can extend deeply: Claude Code, skills, subagents, hooks and MCP connectors.
- Pick Gemini if you’re a Google Workspace household or team, want lots of cloud storage bundled, need image and video generation, or want the most generous free and low-cost tiers.
- Use both if budget allows. Many developers keep one as the daily driver and the other for second opinions.
Plans and prices
| Tier | Claude | Gemini (Google AI) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0: chat, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts | $0: Flash-Lite model, image generation, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, 15 GB storage |
| Low-cost | None | AI Plus $4.99/month: Flash model, 2x Free usage, 400 GB storage |
| Standard | Pro $20/month or $17/month annually | AI Pro $19.99/month: Gemini 4 Argon, 4x Free usage, 5 TB storage |
| Heavy use | Max $100 (5x Pro) or $200 (20x Pro) | AI Ultra $99.99 (5x AI Pro) or $199.99 (20x AI Pro) |
| Teams | Team $25 or $125 per seat monthly ($20 or $100 annually) | Gemini Enterprise from $21 per seat |
What the money buys differs:
- Claude Pro includes Claude Code, Projects, more Claude models, scheduled tasks, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 integration. See our Claude pricing guide for every tier.
- Google AI Pro includes Gemini in Gmail, Docs and other Google apps, the Jules coding agent, entry-level access to Google Antigravity, 1,000 Google Flow credits for video, Gemini in Chrome, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite.
If you were going to pay for Google One storage anyway, Google AI Pro’s bundle is hard to beat on raw value. If you want the most capable coding agent setup for $20, Claude Pro is the stronger buy for developers.
Models
| Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|
| Flagship | Claude Fable 5.1 (API), with Opus 5.5 as the recommended starting model | Gemini 4 Argon |
| Balanced | Claude Sonnet 5.5 | Gemini Pro and Flash models |
| Fast and cheap | Claude Haiku 5.5 | Gemini Flash-Lite |
| Context window (API) | 1M tokens on all current Claude models | Varies by model; check Google’s model docs |
Which “feels” smarter depends on the task. Our advice: run the same five real prompts from your work through both on the same day and judge the outputs, not the leaderboard.
API pricing for developers
Per million tokens, standard paid tier, as of October 24, 2026:
| Model | Input | Output | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 | Top reasoning model |
| Claude Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 | |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | |
| Claude Haiku 5.5 | $0.10 | $0.50 | Prompts up to 100k tokens |
| Gemini 4 Argon | $2 | $10 | Rises to $4 / $20 on December 1, 2026 |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | $0.75 | $3.75 | Rises to $1.50 / $7.50 on January 1, 2027 |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite | $0.30 | $2.50 |
Both offer a 50% Batch API discount and prompt caching. Google’s Gemini API also has a free tier for some models (not Gemini 4 Argon) with the caveat that free-tier content is used to improve Google’s products. Claude’s API has no free tier, though Max and Team subscriptions include monthly API credits. Full Claude details, including caching multipliers, are in our Claude API pricing guide.
Coding
This is where the two diverge most.
Claude’s coding stack centres on Claude Code, an agent that runs in your terminal, IDE, desktop app or the web, reads your repo, runs commands and edits code. It’s extended with skills, subagents, hooks, plugins and MCP servers, and it’s included from Pro upwards.
Google’s coding stack has three pieces: Gemini CLI, an open-source terminal agent with a free daily quota when you sign in with a Google account; Jules, an asynchronous coding agent with higher limits on AI Pro and Ultra; and Google Antigravity, an agentic development platform with entry-level access on AI Pro.
For a detailed terminal-agent comparison, read Claude Code vs Gemini CLI.
Everyday use: writing, research and documents
| Task | Claude | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Long documents | Projects with shared files and instructions; 1M-token models on the API | Upload up to 1,500 pages of documents on paid plans |
| Research | Web search on every plan, including Free | Deep Research on every plan, including Free |
| Building small apps or visuals | Artifacts | Canvas |
| Images and video | Not a focus | Image generation on Free; video and Google Flow credits on paid plans |
| Office suite | Microsoft 365 integration (Pro and up) | Gemini in Gmail, Docs and other Google apps |
| Browser | Claude in Chrome (Pro and up) | Gemini in Chrome |
If you need to generate images or video regularly, Gemini’s bundle covers that and Claude’s doesn’t. If your work is mostly text, analysis and code, both are strong; try each on your real documents.
Privacy and data use
Both companies publish detailed policies, and settings differ between consumer and business plans. Two facts from the pricing pages are worth knowing:
- Claude’s Team plan states no model training on your content by default.
- Google’s free Gemini API tier states content is used to improve its products, while the paid tier states it is not.
For anything sensitive, read the current consumer privacy settings of whichever assistant you use, and prefer business plans for company data.
Extensibility
Claude leans hard into being customisable. Beyond chat, the same building blocks work across Claude Code and the apps: MCP connectors for external tools, skills for repeatable procedures, and plugins to bundle them. The MCP servers guide shows how to connect GitHub, databases and browsers.
Gemini’s extensibility runs through Gems, Google app integrations and, for developers, Gemini CLI extensions and MCP support. If your tools already live in Google, that’s often enough.
Who should choose which
Choose Claude if:
- you code daily and want a configurable agent, not just a chat box;
- you value long-form writing and careful analysis;
- your company runs on Microsoft 365 or you want MCP connectors to your own tools.
Choose Gemini if:
- you’re deep in Gmail, Docs and Drive;
- you want bundled storage, video generation or YouTube Premium Lite;
- you want the strongest free tier or a $4.99 option.

Getting the most out of Claude
If you pick Claude, the fastest wins come from setup, not plan size: a short CLAUDE.md, two or three skills and the MCP servers you actually use. Our Claude kit hub shows how to put that together, and Getting started with Claude Code takes you from install to first PR.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude better than Gemini?
Neither wins everywhere. Claude is the stronger pick if coding agents and deep customization matter most, with Claude Code, skills, subagents and hooks. Gemini is the stronger pick if you live in Google Workspace, want generous free tiers or bundled storage, or need image and video generation in the same plan.
Which is cheaper, Claude or Gemini?
Entry plans are almost identical: Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 billed annually) and Google AI Pro is $19.99, as of October 24, 2026. Google also has a $4.99 AI Plus tier. At the top, Claude Max is $100 or $200 and Google AI Ultra is $99.99 or $199.99. On the API, Gemini's Flash models are cheaper than Claude's mid-tier, while Claude Haiku 5.5 is cheaper than Gemini Flash for short prompts.
Is Claude or Gemini better for coding?
Both have strong coding agents. Claude Code is mature, terminal-first and highly configurable; Gemini CLI is open source with a free daily quota, and Google AI Pro adds Jules and Antigravity. Test both on your own repository; see our Claude Code vs Gemini CLI comparison.
Does Gemini have something like Claude Projects?
Gemini has Gems (custom assistants) and Gemini Notebook for research and writing over your sources. Claude has Projects with shared instructions and files. They overlap but are not identical, so compare them on your own documents.
