Claude vs ChatGPT (2026): Which AI Assistant Fits You?

Claude vs ChatGPT for everyday use: writing, research, files, memory, privacy and plan prices compared side by side, checked against official pages in 2026.

Claude vs ChatGPT

Quick answer: Claude and ChatGPT cost the same at the main tier ($20 a month as of October 24, 2026) and both handle writing, research and file analysis well. Pick Claude for long-form writing, careful document work and privacy-first defaults. Pick ChatGPT for the broadest all-round assistant and a cheaper $8 Go tier. Test both free plans first.

This page compares the two as everyday assistants: writing, research, files, memory, apps and privacy. If you mainly write code, read Claude vs ChatGPT for coding, which compares Claude Code with Codex. If Google is also on your shortlist, see Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini.

How we checked: Claude details come from claude.com/pricing and Anthropic’s privacy center. ChatGPT prices come from OpenAI’s plans and pricing page. OpenAI’s main pricing page and help center blocked our automated checks (HTTP 403), so ChatGPT privacy and memory details come from OpenAI’s help center as shown in search results. All checked October 24, 2026, US prices before tax. Claudekit.ai is independent and not affiliated with Anthropic or OpenAI.

Plans and prices side by side

StandardPro, $20/month or $17/month billed annuallyPlus, $20/month
Power userMax, from $100/month (5x or 20x Pro usage)Pro, from $100/month ($100, $200 or $500 tiers)
TeamTeam, $25/seat monthly or $20 annually (premium seat $125 or $100)Business, $25/user monthly or $20 annually, 2+ users
Enterprise$20/seat/month annually plus usage at API rates, 20-seat minimumContact sales

What this means in practice:

  • At $20 there’s no price advantage. Choose on features and how the answers feel to you.
  • ChatGPT Go fills a gap Claude doesn’t. If $20 is too much, Go is the cheapest paid option across the two.
  • Claude is slightly cheaper annually. Pro billed yearly works out to $17 a month.
  • Power tiers match at $100. Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro both scale usage for heavy users; ChatGPT adds a $500 tier.

Our Claude pricing guide explains every Claude plan and its usage limits, and Claude Pro vs Max helps you decide whether the bigger tier is worth it.

What the free plans include

Both free plans are good enough to decide which assistant you prefer.

Claude’s pricing page lists these on Claude Free: chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, Artifacts, skills, connectors, voice mode, Incognito chats and up to five projects. Research and Claude Code require Pro.

For ChatGPT Free, OpenAI’s plans page we could reach focuses on Codex access (“quick coding tasks”) and doesn’t list the full chat feature set. Check chatgpt.com for today’s Free limits before you compare.

Everyday use: chat, voice and apps

Both work on the web and in desktop and mobile apps. Claude’s plans page lists voice mode on every plan; check OpenAI’s current page for ChatGPT voice limits. The bigger difference is style.

  • Claude tends to give structured, measured answers and follows long, detailed instructions closely. People who like it usually mention its writing voice and that it pushes back when a request is unclear.
  • ChatGPT is the generalist: a wide feature set in one place, a huge user base, and lots of third-party guides for almost any task.

Neither style is objectively better. Ask both the same five questions from your real week, such as an email reply, a summary, a decision you’re stuck on, and keep the one whose answers you’d actually send.

Writing

Writing is where Claude has its strongest reputation, especially for long-form drafts, editing for tone and keeping a consistent voice across a document.

Creating filesFile creation on every plan, including FreeVaries by plan; see OpenAI’s pricing page
Office documentsClaude Docs and Slides listed on plans; Microsoft 365 extension on ProCheck OpenAI’s current feature list

Practical tip for both: paste a sample of writing you like and ask the assistant to describe the style before drafting. Our Claude prompting best practices apply to ChatGPT too.

Both search the web and cite sources. Claude adds a Research mode on Pro and above that runs a longer, multi-step investigation and returns a cited report. Free includes regular web search.

ChatGPT offers its own research features too, but OpenAI’s help center blocked our direct check, so we can’t confirm which plans include which research limits today. Check chatgpt.com before you compare.

For fact-sensitive work, the rule is the same on both: open the citations and check the claim against the source.

Files, data and analysis

Both read documents, spreadsheets and images you upload.

  • Claude includes code execution and file creation on every plan, so it can read a CSV, compute summaries and hand back a new spreadsheet or chart. Current Claude models support up to 1M tokens of context through the API, which hints at how much they can hold at once.
  • ChatGPT also analyses uploaded files and data; which tools and limits you get depends on your plan, so check OpenAI’s current feature list.

If your work is heavy on long PDFs or many files at once, test both with the same documents. Differences show up in how well each keeps details straight across hundreds of pages.

Memory and projects

Both can remember context across chats, and both organize work into projects.

FeatureClaudeChatGPT
MemoryIncluded on every plan“Saved memories” plus insights from chat history
ProjectsUp to 5 on Free, unlimited on ProProjects with their own files, instructions and history
Project-only contextProject knowledge and instructions apply to that project’s chatsProject chats stay within their project
Private modeIncognito chatsTemporary Chat

Projects are the most useful feature for repeat work: upload your style guide, product docs or research once and every chat starts with that context. See our Claude Projects guide for setup tips and Claude Artifacts for turning outputs into documents and small apps.

Integrations and apps

  • Claude uses connectors built on the open Model Context Protocol to reach tools such as Google Drive, issue trackers and databases. Pro adds Chrome and Microsoft 365 extensions, and the Claude desktop app can run local MCP servers. Browser users can also look at Claude Chrome extensions.
  • ChatGPT offers its own apps and connectors and, on Plus, cloud integrations such as Slack for Codex, according to OpenAI’s plans page.

If you plan to connect your own systems, Claude’s MCP support is a practical advantage because the same server works in the Claude apps, Claude Code and other MCP-compatible tools. Our MCP servers for Claude guide shows how.

Privacy and data controls

This is one of the clearest differences, and it comes down to defaults.

Claude (consumer plans)ChatGPT (Free, Plus, Pro)
Chats used to improve modelsOnly if you choose to allow itOn by default; turn off “Improve the model for everyone”
Private chatsIncognito chats are never used for trainingTemporary chats aren’t used for training and may be kept up to 30 days for safety
Business plansTeam: no model training by defaultBusiness: no training on business data by default

Anthropic’s privacy center notes one exception: conversations flagged for safety review may be analysed to enforce its usage policy. Whichever you choose, review the settings on day one.

Coding, briefly

Both can explain and write code in chat, but serious coding now happens in agents: Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex. Claude Code is included from Claude Pro; Codex is available on every ChatGPT plan from Free upwards, per OpenAI’s plans page. That’s a real difference if you want to try a coding agent without paying. We compare the two in depth in Claude vs ChatGPT for coding, and what is Claude Code explains Anthropic’s agent.

Building with the API

If you’re a developer building a product rather than chatting, you’ll use the APIs, which are billed per token and separately from the chat plans. Claude’s lineup and prices are in Claude models explained; start coding with the Claude API tutorial. We didn’t verify OpenAI’s current API prices for this page.

Who should choose which

Choose Claude if you write a lot and care about voice, you work with long documents, you want chats kept out of training unless you opt in, or you plan to connect your own tools through MCP.

Choose ChatGPT if you want a single generalist assistant, you need a cheaper paid tier than $20, or you want a coding agent available on the free plan.

Use both if you can: one paid plan as your daily driver and the other’s free tier for a second opinion on important work. To understand everything Claude offers beyond chat, read what is Claude.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude better than ChatGPT?

Neither wins for everyone. Claude is a strong pick for long-form writing, careful analysis and working with documents, with privacy defaults that keep chats out of training unless you allow it. ChatGPT is the broader generalist with a cheaper Go tier. Try the same real tasks on both free plans before paying.

Are Claude and ChatGPT the same price?

At the main tier, yes. As of October 24, 2026, Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20 a month, and both have free plans and power tiers from $100 a month. ChatGPT also has an $8 Go plan; Claude has no tier between Free and Pro, but Pro drops to $17 a month billed annually.

Which is more private, Claude or ChatGPT?

Defaults differ. Anthropic says consumer Claude chats are used to improve models only if you choose to allow it, and Incognito chats never are. OpenAI's help center says data sharing is on by default for Free, Plus and Pro, with an opt-out setting and Temporary Chat. Both exclude business plans from training by default.

Can I use Claude and ChatGPT together?

Yes. Many people keep one paid plan and use the other's free tier for second opinions. Prompts carry over almost unchanged, and both support connectors to tools you already use.
