doc-coauthoring is an Anthropic example skill that turns Claude into an active writing partner for structured documents: technical specs, design docs, decision docs, PRDs, RFCs and proposals. Instead of drafting immediately, it walks you through a three-stage workflow designed to get context out of your head and produce a document that works for readers who were not in the room.

What it does

  1. Context gathering: Claude asks about document type, audience, desired impact, templates and constraints, then invites you to dump everything: background, discussions, rejected alternatives, timelines, stakeholder concerns. It reads linked docs and files and flags images without alt text.
  2. Refinement and structure: the document is built section by section through brainstorming and editing.
  3. Reader testing: a fresh Claude with no context reads the draft to find blind spots, because many readers will paste your doc into an AI assistant.

Example prompts

I need to write a design doc for moving our job queue to Postgres
Help me draft a PRD for team workspaces; the audience is engineering leads
Turn these meeting notes into a decision doc

Tips and limits

  • Budget time for the questions; the payoff is a doc that needs fewer review rounds.
  • Shorthand answers are fine; the skill explicitly accepts messy info dumps.
  • Connect Notion or Confluence through Notion MCP or Atlassian MCP so Claude can read existing docs.
  • No license file ships with this skill folder, unlike most Anthropic example skills; check terms before redistributing it.

Frequently asked questions

What triggers doc-coauthoring?

Requests like write a doc, draft a proposal, create a spec, or mentions of PRDs, design docs, decision docs and RFCs. Claude offers the workflow and you can decline.

What is reader testing?

The final stage tests the document with a fresh Claude that has no prior context, to catch gaps before real readers, or their AI assistants, see it.

Can I skip the structured workflow?

Yes. If you decline, Claude works freeform as usual.
