Best Claude Code Skills (2026): 12 Picks Worth Installing
The best Claude Code skills in 2026: official Anthropic skills, Superpowers, Matt Pocock's skills and frontend picks, with verified install commands.
By Claudekit Team Published 11 min read
Skills are folders of instructions and scripts that Claude loads when a task calls for them. Thousands now exist, and most are thin wrappers around a prompt. This list is the opposite: twelve skills and skill packs that change how Claude Code works in practice, from Anthropic’s official repo and from maintainers with a track record.
Every install command and skill name below was checked against the source repositories and the Claude Code skills docs in October 2026. If skills are new to you, start with our Claude Code skills guide.

How to install skills in Claude Code
There are three routes. Use plugins when you can, because they update cleanly.
1. Anthropic’s official plugin marketplace. Claude Code adds claude-plugins-official automatically the first time you start an interactive session:
/plugin install skill-creator@claude-plugins-official
2. The anthropics/skills marketplace. Anthropic’s skills repo is itself a marketplace with bundles:
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
document-skills contains xlsx, docx, pptx and pdf. example-skills contains algorithmic-art, brand-guidelines, canvas-design, doc-coauthoring, frontend-design, internal-comms, mcp-builder, skill-creator, slack-gif-creator, theme-factory, web-artifacts-builder and webapp-testing.
3. Manual copy. Copy a skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ (all your projects) or .claude/skills/ (one repo, commit it for your team). The folder must contain a SKILL.md.
See the plugins guide for marketplaces, updates and team setup.
1. skill-creator
Anthropic’s skill for building skills. It helps you create a skill from scratch, improve an existing one, run evals and benchmark performance.
/plugin install skill-creator@claude-plugins-official
Why it’s first: the best skills are the ones written for your codebase and your team’s habits. skill-creator turns “here’s how we deploy” into a tested SKILL.md. Details: skill-creator.
2. Superpowers
An open-source skills framework and development methodology. Its skills include brainstorming, writing-plans, executing-plans, test-driven-development, systematic-debugging, verification-before-completion, subagent-driven-development, using-git-worktrees, requesting-code-review and writing-skills.
/plugin install superpowers@claude-plugins-official
Pick it if you want Claude to ask before building, plan in small steps, test first and verify before claiming success, without designing that process yourself. Details: Superpowers.
3. Matt Pocock’s skills
A set of small, composable engineering skills that the author describes as built to fix common agent failure modes: misalignment, verbosity and code that doesn’t work. Highlights include /grill-me and /grill-with-docs (Claude interviews you before building), /tdd (red-green-refactor), /diagnosing-bugs, /code-review, /to-spec and /to-tickets.
claude plugin install mattpocock-skills@claude-plugins-official
Then run /setup-matt-pocock-skills once per repo; it asks which issue tracker and labels you use.
Pick it if you like control: the README explicitly positions these skills as small and easy to adapt, in contrast to frameworks that own the whole process. Choose this or Superpowers as your main methodology; both cover planning and TDD.
4. frontend-design
Guides Claude toward intentional visual design rather than generic layouts: grounding the design in the subject, applying hierarchy and typography principles, then critiquing and revising.
/plugin install frontend-design@claude-plugins-official
Details: frontend-design.
5. webapp-testing
Teaches Claude to test local web applications with Playwright scripts: checking UI behaviour, capturing screenshots and reading browser logs. It ships in the example-skills bundle.
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
Details: webapp-testing.
6. Modern Web Guidance
From the Google Chrome team, with support from the Microsoft Edge team. Its CLI returns curated guidance on modern browser APIs, CSS layout, performance and accessibility so Claude stops reaching for legacy patterns and heavy polyfills. The project labels itself a preview release.
/plugin marketplace add GoogleChrome/modern-web-guidance
/plugin install modern-web-guidance@googlechrome
It’s also listed in Anthropic’s official marketplace as modern-web-guidance. Alternatively, npx modern-web-guidance@latest install runs an interactive installer.
7. mcp-builder
A guide for building high-quality MCP servers that let Claude talk to external services, in Python or TypeScript. Part of example-skills.
Pick it if you’re wiring Claude into an internal API. Test the result with MCP Inspector, then see our list of the best MCP servers for Claude Code for what good servers look like. Details: mcp-builder.
8. Document skills: pdf, docx, xlsx, pptx
Anthropic’s document skills read, create and edit PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets and slide decks. They’re among the most complex skills in the repo and worth reading as examples even if you don’t use them.
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
Note the license: these four are source-available, not open source. Details: pdf, docx, xlsx, pptx.
9. claude-api
Reference and workflows for building applications on the Claude API and Anthropic SDKs. You probably already have it: Claude Code ships /claude-api as a bundled skill. It’s also in the anthropics/skills repo for other agents. Details: claude-api.
10. doc-coauthoring
A structured workflow for writing documentation, proposals, technical specs and decision docs with Claude: transferring context, refining through iteration and checking the doc works for its readers. Part of example-skills.
Pick it if your team writes RFCs or design docs and you want Claude to interview you rather than produce a generic first draft.
11. web-artifacts-builder
Tools for building elaborate, multi-component HTML artifacts with React, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui. The skill’s own description says it’s for complex artifacts that need state management or routing, not simple single-file HTML. Part of example-skills.
12. theme-factory
Applies a consistent theme to slides, docs, reports and HTML pages. It includes 10 preset themes with colours and fonts, or generates a new one. Part of example-skills.
Best Claude Code skills for frontend teams
If your team ships UI, this stack covers design, platform knowledge and verification:
| Need | Skill | Pair with |
|---|---|---|
| Look and feel | frontend-design | theme-factory for consistent palettes |
| Modern APIs | Modern Web Guidance | Context7 for framework docs |
| Verification | webapp-testing | Playwright MCP or Chrome DevTools MCP |
| Prototypes | web-artifacts-builder | — |
The pattern that works: frontend-design shapes the output, Modern Web Guidance keeps the code current, and a browser tool lets Claude look at what it built and fix it before you review. Add a project skill in .claude/skills/ that records your component conventions, design tokens and testing commands, and put the always-true facts in CLAUDE.md.
Skills cost context: install with intent
Each skill’s description is loaded into context so Claude knows when to use it; the full SKILL.md body loads only when it’s invoked. The docs note that the combined description and when_to_use text is truncated at 1,536 characters per skill in that listing. One skill is cheap. Fifty overlapping skills are not, and they make Claude’s choice of skill less predictable.
Practical rules:
- One methodology pack. Superpowers, Matt Pocock’s skills and paid kits overlap; pick one.
- Manual-only for side effects. Add
disable-model-invocation: trueto skills that deploy, commit or send messages. You can still run them as/skill-name, and their description stays out of context. - Prune monthly. Run
/contextto see what’s loaded and uninstall what you haven’t used. Our context management guide covers the rest.
Skills, subagents or hooks?
Skills hold procedures Claude follows when relevant. Use subagents for isolated work in a separate context, and hooks for anything that must happen every time. Our skills vs subagents vs hooks guide has a decision table.
Building a full Claude kit
Skills are one layer of a Claude kit: instructions, skills, subagents, hooks and MCP servers working together. You can assemble one from the free picks above. If you’d rather buy a large, pre-integrated bundle of skills, subagents and workflow commands, Agentkit.best is a paid option; our Agentkit.best vs DIY comparison covers the trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Claude Code skill to install first?
skill-creator, because it helps you write and test your own skills, which is where most of the value is. If you want a full workflow instead, try Superpowers or Matt Pocock's skills, but pick one methodology rather than stacking several.
Are Anthropic's skills in the anthropics/skills repo free?
Most are open source under Apache 2.0. The document skills (docx, pdf, pptx, xlsx) are source-available rather than open source. Anthropic notes the repo is for demonstration and education, so test skills before relying on them.
Do installed skills slow Claude Code down or use context?
Each skill's description is loaded into context so Claude knows it exists; the full SKILL.md body loads only when the skill is used. Many skills add up, so uninstall ones you don't use, or set disable-model-invocation on skills you only run manually.
Where do Claude Code skills live?
Personal skills go in ~/.claude/skills/skill-name/SKILL.md, project skills in .claude/skills/skill-name/SKILL.md, and plugin skills inside the plugin's skills folder. Plugins are the easiest way to install and update third-party skills.
Which skills are best for frontend developers?
frontend-design for intentional visual design, webapp-testing for Playwright-based checks, and the Chrome team's Modern Web Guidance for current web platform APIs. Pair them with Playwright MCP or Chrome DevTools MCP so Claude can see the result.
