The Slack MCP and Skills Plugin is Slack’s official way to bring Slack into Claude Code. It wires Claude to Slack’s hosted MCP server at https://mcp.slack.com/mcp and adds nine skills plus five slash commands for both everyday messaging and Slack app development.

Who it is for

Teams that coordinate in Slack and want Claude to search discussions, summarize channels or draft announcements; and developers building Slack apps with Bolt and Block Kit.

Install in Claude Code

From the README:

/plugin install slack@claude-plugins-official

The MCP server is configured automatically, and you sign in to your workspace via OAuth on first use. Learn how marketplace installs work in the plugins guide.

What you get

  • MCP tools: search messages, files, users and channels; send and schedule messages; read threads; add reactions; create and update canvases.
  • Skills: slack-messaging, slack-search, slack-api, slack-docs, slack-cli, create-slack-app, test-slack-app, deploy-slack-app and block-kit.
  • Commands: /slack:summarize-channel, /slack:find-discussions, /slack:draft-announcement, /slack:standup and /slack:channel-digest.

Use cases

  • “Summarize the last day of activity in #engineering.”
  • Generate your standup from your own recent Slack activity.
  • Find past discussions on a topic before writing a design doc.
  • Scaffold a Slack app with Bolt for Python and a Block Kit modal.

Pros

  • Official, hosted and OAuth-based.
  • Skills and commands make common workflows one prompt.
  • Same plugin also targets Cursor and Codex.

Cons and caveats

  • Admin approval is required, and rate limits apply per tool.
  • Posting is real: test in a sandbox channel first.
  • For restricted workspaces, the popular community server korotovsky/slack-mcp-server (about 1.9k stars) is a local alternative, but it relies on user or browser tokens you must protect.

Frequently asked questions

Does my Slack admin need to approve it?

Yes. Slack's docs say workspace admins must approve MCP client integrations, and only directory-published or internal apps may use MCP.

Can Claude post messages?

Yes. The hosted server supports sending, scheduling and drafting messages. Confirm drafts before letting Claude send anything to a busy channel.

Is there a self-hosted alternative?

The community korotovsky/slack-mcp-server runs locally over stdio, SSE or HTTP and keeps message posting disabled by default.
