The Neon MCP Server is Neon’s official Model Context Protocol server for Neon serverless Postgres. It lets Claude create projects and branches, run SQL, describe schemas and walk through branch-based migrations in plain language. Neon hosts it at mcp.neon.tech, so there is nothing to run locally.
Who it is for
Developers who build on Neon and want Claude Code to inspect schemas, test a migration on a branch, or tune a slow query without leaving the terminal.
Install
The quickest route in the README is Neon’s init command. It signs you in with OAuth, creates an API key and configures Claude Code, Cursor or VS Code:
npx neon@latest init
To add only the hosted server, the README’s URL is https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp. With Claude Code’s documented HTTP syntax that becomes:
claude mcp add --transport http neon https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp
An OAuth window opens on first use. For a safer setup, add query parameters to the URL, for example ?readonly=true&projectId=YOUR_PROJECT_ID. If you use an API key instead of OAuth, send it as an Authorization: Bearer header and keep it out of version control.
Use cases
- Schema work: “Create a users table with id, name and email in my-project.”
- Safe migrations: Claude prepares a migration on a temporary branch, you review, then it completes it.
- Query tuning: list slow queries and ask Claude to explain and fix one.
- Project overview: summarize all your Neon projects and what each holds.
Pros
- Official, hosted and MIT licensed.
- Fine-grained controls: read-only mode, project scoping, tool categories and a pinned Postgres role.
- Migrations use Neon branches, so changes are tested before they touch the main branch.
- A no-auth
/api/list-toolsendpoint lets you preview which tools a URL exposes.
Cons and caveats
- Neon does not recommend it for production databases. Always review actions before they run.
- Without
roleName, SQL runs as the database owner. get_connection_stringreturns a privileged password, so it is withheld in read-only mode.- With OAuth, the server works on your personal account by default. Mention an
org_idorproject_idfor organization projects.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make Neon MCP read-only?
Yes. Add readonly=true to the server URL, or untick Allow writes on the OAuth page. run_sql stays available but each query runs in a READ ONLY transaction.
Can I limit it to one project?
Yes. Add projectId to the URL. You can also restrict tool categories with category and pin a Postgres role with roleName.
Should I use it on production databases?
No. Neon says the server is intended for local development and IDE integrations, and does not recommend it for production environments.
What license is it under?
The repository is MIT licensed.
